About the Department of Public Health
The University Department of Public Health is part of the University’s Old Road Campus in Oxford, one of the foremost concentrations of population health research in the UK. The Department employs 160 staff from a variety of disciplines, including public health consultants, health service researchers, epidemiologists, statisticians, economists, sociologists, ethicists and lawyers. We also provide training to NHS academic clinical fellows, Public Health Specialist Registrars and Foundation trainees and currently have 11 full or part-time work placements.
The Department has expanded substantially in recent years and had income of £13m in the 2011/2012 academic year. It has a strong interdisciplinary focus and collaborations with national and international organisations including the Department of Health, major charities such as the British Heart Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Cochrane Collaboration, the World Health Organisation, industry, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programmes in Kenya, Vietnam, Malawi, Thailand-Laos, and South Africa. In 2011/2012 we hosted 85 academic visitors, mostly from overseas, and are currently supervising 25 Masters students and 50 doctoral students.
