Public health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, public and private, communities and individuals. Wanless 2004
The Nuffield Department of Population Health is part of the Medical Sciences Division of Oxford University. It conducts internationally renowned research into the factors affecting population health worldwide and into the prevention and treatment of disease. Distinguishing features of the department are a focus on inter-disciplinary research and capacity building. It combines groups from the Department of Public Health with the Cancer Epidemiology Unit, Clinical Trial Service Unit and Epidemiological Studies Unit.
